On August 4th, 2020, a deadly explosion occurred in Beirut, Lebanon. Nearly
200 people died and 6,000 were severely injured. This explosion was caused by
2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate that was stored next to the city’s main port. This
ammonium nitrate had been stored there for nearly six years and was
completely neglected. Even with Lebanon’s economic state already hurt, the blast damage has been estimated to cost $15 billion.
What are you doing to help? Although many people have made GoFundMes
to donate to Lebanon, it is important to make sure you donate to the most reliable
places. Some reliable organizations that will help the people are the Lebanese
Red Cross, Just Giving Disaster Relief Fund, and the Lebanese Food Bank. These
organizations work directly with the people of Lebanon to fix and restore all that
has been taken from them. If you cannot donate, you can sign petitions and have your voice heard. Signing a petition will go a long way in having more people recognize what has happened!
The people of Lebanon have lost something that most people cannot imagine: their homes, clothes, stores, and belongings have been destroyed. If we think about the big picture, Lebanon needs us. They need all the basic necessities that we take for granted in our everyday lives. Can you imagine everything you own being destroyed? Take some action, and use your voice. We are all human and are in this together. With one step at a time, Beirut will be restored.
