The Story of George Floyd's Impact

As you probably know due to the media, there has been a significant amount of trauma caused worldwide by the police killing George Floyd. The following months after this tragic event, many people have been going to Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests or movements and it has been confirmed that all 50 states in the USA have protested for justice, as well as 60 other countries. This has caused many people to speak up about police brutality.

Just focusing on the USA, it is remarkable to see that all 50 states have chosen to say something about this topic. Not only has George Floyd’s death generated strong feelings such as anger or misery, especially in the time of a global pandemic, but people have started to recognize more surrounding this issue. Many of us who have always respected BLM have learned more, meaning that this whole idea of BLM is brought up more frequently now. Not just with George Floyd’s death, but also Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery.

Even people who are not of color have started educating themselves on this subject. Some white people acted as human shields during protests to protect black people at the event. People in general, regardless of their race, have started signing many petitions to contribute help. This is one part of this problem that unifies us to fight for what is right.

But what has really changed? You would assume that it is common knowledge that BLM is just a basic human right and shouldn’t be in question. How come the discussions everywhere have drastically shifted when George Floyd was killed in May? This is the one beneficial thing that can be created from the situation. People are still talking about it, and it may never stop. So if you can do anything to help this matter, do it out of your best interest. We can all work together and help this problem for the better of everyone.
